Growth hormone (Somatotropin)

The growth hormone is formed in the pituitary gland and is one of five hormone groups that are produced in the anterior pituitary. Almost half of these cells only form the growth hormone, which underlines the importance of this signal substance. Somatotropin is one of the very old hormones on our planet, its predecessors are over half a billion years old. Although it has had an abundance of tasks in the course of evolution, it regulates the growth of numerous organs in humans - as the name suggests. If there is no childhood, dwarfism is the result. This is why this hormone is used generously in children when it is deficient. The importance of growth hormone in the adult was long unclear although the growth hormone also decreases in the course of an adult's life and can thus trigger a number of complaints. The growth hormone promotes the incorporation of amino acids and protein into the cell and thus controls all the processes that are used to build organs. Nitrogen is an important component of protein, it occurs in every amino acid and is increasingly absorbed under the influence of growth hormone and transported into the cell. This is a prerequisite - similar to plants - for the synthesis of organic tissue. If the growth hormone is missing, the protein synthesis is throttled, which is initially manifested in the muscles: they become smaller, lose elasticity and thereby of course also change the composition of the human body, since there is a shift in the fat-muscle ratio to the disadvantage of the muscle mass. Since the growth hormone breaks down fatty acids at the same time in order to get the energy to build muscle, the deficiency of this hormone increases the fat mass. This is a similar effect to that seen with dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate. However, somatotropin differs from DHEA in its active, muscle-building effect.

The growth hormone is of great importance for the provision of energy: the somatotropin works in a similar way to the male hormones: it cuts the fat droplets in the fat cells, mobilizing free fatty acids and thus creating energy for other anabolic functions. The excessive fat deposits and the degeneration of the muscle tissue were, therefore, the first symptoms that indicated a lack of somatotropin in adults as well. In fact, by balancing growth hormone deficiency, you could increase muscle strength and reduce fat.

It has recently been impressively demonstrated that not only the muscles of the feet and hands, that is to say, the peripheral organs, but also the heart muscle itself improves its functions through the use of growth hormones. In patients with cardiac muscle weakness, a significant decrease in heart failure was actually registered after growth hormone intake. Further examinations will have to be carried out to determine whether it will be possible to offer this therapy to elderly people with heart disease in the future. What is certain, however, is that the increase in muscle and the decrease in adipose tissue is a function of the growth hormone.

But not only the proteins of the muscle, but also the protein molecules, which connect cells with each other and fill the space between the individual cell groups, are stimulated by the growth hormone. The so-called elasticity of the skin, the turgor, undoubtedly depends on the water content. An increase in the tissue water was observed with a somatotropin supply, which was initially attributed to the water-storing effect of the somatotropin. However, the explanation for this also seems to be different: it is not the water that is stored between the cells, but those connecting proteins that strengthen the cell structure and incorporate the water that is important for their function between the individual cells. This gives the fabric a smoother look, the tissue pressure increases and the firmness of the skin also increases visually. Because there is also a layer in the skin that is rich in the proteins that are otherwise found in other organs between the cells. Protein/sugar compounds that are synthesized to varying degrees in the middle skin layer below the epidermis not only determine the elasticity of the skin but are also a prerequisite for the formation of elastin and collagen, components that also determine the "youth of the skin". Somatotropin has the ability to fill the "extracellular matrix", as the space between the cells is called, with binding proteins and thus not only to improve the communication exchange between the individual cells but also to improve the strength of the tissue itself. Because there is also a layer in the skin that is rich in the proteins that are otherwise found in other organs between the cells.

This tissue-supporting task of growth hormone is probably also important for anchoring the teeth; the cells of the "craniofacial head area", which also include teeth and tooth anchoring, are stimulated by growth hormone in childhood and probably also during pregnancy so that it can also be concluded that somatotropin is important for the teeth of adults.

Diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency

While it is easy to objectify the diagnosis of a somatotropin deficiency in children due to the clinic, but also because of the growth hormone level measurement, the diagnosis in this regard is more difficult in adults: from the age of 30 there is a continuous decrease in somatotropin; Not; because the pituitary gland ages and becomes less functional, but because growth hormone synthesis is slowed down by brain transmitters and somatostatin. This increases with age and reduces the constant release of the growth hormone. Medicine is currently still answering different questions as to whether the growth hormone, which is becoming less and less as the years go by, should be balanced out. However, if there are complaints, those suggesting a growth hormone deficiency and if the somatotropin in the blood is actually low, a "therapeutic test" is justified; If the symptoms improve after a growth tienda de esteroides hormone intake without causing a disadvantage, therapy in this regard is justified. The main symptom of a somatotropin deficiency is fatigue, fatigue, fat gain, and muscle loss, but also mental changes such as depressed mood and sociophobia - you avoid the company of other people. The growth hormone level can be objectified by a blood test, although it should not be forgotten that the formation and release of somatotropin are subject to a daily rhythm: in the early hours of the night, it increases, to probably repair the damage from the previous day due to its build-up effect profile. In the early morning hours, however, it drops again to make room for the cortisol, which rises early in the morning and adjusts people for the stress of the next day. Because of these fluctuations, it is not always easy to determine the actual somatotropin level with a single blood test. That is why "stimulation tests" are used to test the body's ability to produce somatotropin. There are also ways to stimulate your own production of growth hormone: since a low sugar level in the blood leads to an increased release of somatotropin, you can stimulate night-time growth hormone production - and thus imitate nature's daily cycle - by reducing the evening meal. Similar to melatonin, growth hormone increases when you do not eat dinner due to the associated hypoglycemia. But moderate exercise in the evening also stimulates growth hormone release. According to initial indications, very small chemical compounds consisting of only a few amino acids can stimulate growth hormone secretion. This effect is also attributed to arginine. However, it has not yet been fully answered whether arginine, which is consumed only with food, stimulates the growth hormone secretion. Arginine is mainly found in fish.
